Estos animales viven directamente sobre el sedimento o en contacto temporal o permanente con la superficie del agua. La obra pretende mostrar una visión global de la diversidad biológica existente y su valor de conservación, con el objetivo de diseñar planes de protección y conservación adecuados para este tipo de fauna, que sin duda constituye uno de nuestros más valiosos patrimonios biológicos. Los autores sostienen que, aunque el número de macroinvertebrados censados actualmente es importante, esta cifra solo representa un 65% de las especies que viven realmente en nuestras aguas continentales.This volume is a fascinating study into the macroinvertebrates found in Galician freshwaters. Marcos A. González and Fernando Cobo, lecturers at the University of Santiago de Compostela, carry out their research activity in the field of Hydrobiology and Limnology, and have also led various research projects in the systematics, faunistics and ecology of river macroinvertebrates. These animals, which on average measure between 3 and 5 mm, live either directly in the river sediment or are in temporary or permanent contact with the water surface. The aim of this work is to provide an overview of the existing biological diversity and its conservation value, in order to draw up protection and conservation schemes that adapt to the specific requirements of this type of fauna, which unquestionably represents a highly valuable part of the region?s biological heritage. The authors claim that despite the extensive census of macroinvertebrates currently in existence, the figures represent a mere 65% of the actual number of species that live in our continental waters.
